Overview

Discover the breathtaking Diyaluma Falls, Sri Lanka's second-highest waterfall at 220 metres, and refresh yourself in its stunning natural rock pools set amid lush highland scenery.

Standing at an impressive 220 metres (720 feet), Diyaluma Falls ranks as the second highest waterfall in Sri Lanka and the 361st tallest in the world. Located approximately 6 kilometres from Koslanda in the Badulla District along the Colombo-Badulla highway, these magnificent falls are fed by Punagala Oya, a tributary of Kuda Oya which flows into Kirindi Oya.

The name Diyaluma, derived from Sinhalese, translates to "rapid flow of water" or poetically as "liquid light." According to Sri Lankan historian Dr. R. L. Brohier, the falls hold a place in local folklore — a tale of a young banished chieftain whose betrothed attempted to reach him via a rope of woven creepers over the escarpment. Tragedy struck when she was dashed against the rocks, and legend holds that the gods, moved by compassion, caused water to spring forth from the mountain, veiling the scene in a curtain of shimmering light — thus giving the falls their evocative name.

This guided excursion takes you on a scenic journey to experience these spectacular falls up close, with the opportunity to swim in the natural rock pools formed at various tiers of the cascade. Your professional guide will accompany you throughout, ensuring both safety and an enriching experience as you discover the natural and cultural heritage of this iconic Sri Lankan landmark. Private transportation from your hotel in the Uva Province is included, along with bottled water and all fees and taxes.
