Overview

Step into a traditional Kandy home for an authentic hands-on Sri Lankan cooking class led by an award-winning chef, where you'll harvest fresh ingredients, prepare fragrant curries, and share a delicious homemade meal.

Meet Chitra, a government-certified culinary instructor from a traditional Sri Lankan family with decades of teaching experience and recognition as an Inspirational Woman of the Year. She offers an immersive, hands-on cooking experience set in a peaceful location just off the Colombo-Kandy highway within the city limits of Kandy.

Your culinary adventure begins in the home garden, where you'll pick fresh vegetables, herbs, and aromatic ingredients that will soon transform into a vibrant Sri Lankan feast. You'll receive an in-depth introduction to Sri Lankan curries — learning about every spice and ingredient used — along with the closely guarded secrets of preparing authentic homemade curry powder. You'll also crack open fresh coconuts, scrape the flesh, and press out coconut milk, a staple of local cuisine.

With hands-on involvement at every step, you'll cook a classic Sri Lankan meal — rice accompanied by five distinct curries — all prepared in traditional clay pots and tailored to your dietary preferences (vegan, vegetarian, or gluten-free). Chitra will share culinary insights and personal tips that you simply won't find anywhere else. Once the cooking is done, sit down together to enjoy your freshly made meal while exchanging stories about Sri Lankan history, culture, and daily life.
