Overview
Explore the highlights of Galle on this private full-day tour, visiting the historic Dutch Fort, a scenic boat ride along Madu River, and a sea turtle conservation centre.
This Galle day tour covers three of the south coast's most celebrated attractions: the iconic Dutch Fort, the tranquil Madu River, and a fascinating turtle conservation centre in Balapitiya.
Galle is a city on the southern coast of Sri Lanka renowned for its seventeenth-century Dutch Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site perched on a rocky promontory facing the Indian Ocean. Defended by rocky shores and sturdy landside ramparts on all four sides, this remarkable fortification traces its origins to the Portuguese, who established Galle as a trading post in 1588.
Madu River, located south of Galle, winds through a landscape of small islands and lush mangrove forests teeming with wildlife. Glide past dozens of vibrant tropical bird species and, if fortune favours you, spot a crocodile lurking among the mangroves.
Along the south coast, sea turtle nesting grounds are carefully protected by dedicated conservation centres. Learn how these organisations safeguard turtle nests, support mothers during the nesting process, and release hatchlings safely back into the ocean. Five sea turtle species nest on Sri Lanka's beaches, making this stretch of coastline one of the most important nesting habitats in the region.

Itinerary
Galle Dutch Fort
- 08:00 AM – Departure & Galle Fort Visit: Your driver will greet you at your hotel and escort you to the iconic Galle Dutch Fort. This seventeenth-century colonial fortification stands on a rocky promontory overlooking the Indian Ocean, defended by rocky shores and sturdy ramparts on all sides. Originally established as a Portuguese trading post in 1588, the fort later became one of the finest examples of European architecture in South Asia. Spend approximately three hours exploring its winding streets, historic churches, museums, and ocean views.
- 11:00 AM – Lunch Break: After the fort visit, you will stop at a local restaurant to enjoy lunch (not included).
Madu River Boat Safari
- 12:00 PM – Madu River Boat Safari: Head to Balapitiya to enjoy a scenic boat ride along the tranquil Madu River. The waterway winds between small islands blanketed with lush mangrove forests, home to a rich diversity of wildlife. Watch for vibrant tropical birds, monitor lizards, and if fortune favours you, a crocodile resting along the banks. The boat fee is paid separately on-site (approximately US$17 for up to 6 people).
Turtle Conservation Centre
- 04:30 PM – Sea Turtle Rehabilitation Centre: Visit a dedicated sea turtle conservation centre along the south coast. Learn how conservationists protect nesting mothers, carefully relocate eggs to the safety of the hatchery, and eventually release the hatchlings back into the ocean. Sri Lanka's beaches are nesting grounds for five species of sea turtle, making this an important and fascinating stop.
- Return to Hotel: After the hatchery visit, your driver will take you back to your hotel in Galle.
