Itinerary
Sigiriya Rock Fortress
- Sigiriya Rock Fortress: A massive rock shield that elegantly dominates the jungle, Sigiriya served as the capital of ancient Sri Lanka around 300 AD. Originally a fortified retreat and later a grand citadel, it features cave villas adorned with frescoes, a mirror wall, water-bound landscaping, and a palace perched atop a giant lion-shaped gateway. The ingenious plumbing system that carried water to the summit is an engineering marvel, and the cave paintings are among the few surviving fresco buono works painted on wet plaster.
Dambulla Cave Temple
- Dambulla Cave Temple: The largest and best-preserved cave temple in Sri Lanka, Dambulla once sheltered King Valagamba as he rose to become one of the most powerful Sinhalese rulers. The temple complex is deeply intertwined with the ancient site of Ibbankattuwa, where human remains dating back 27,000 years were discovered. Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1991, the five painted cave shrines — perched 350 feet above the surrounding plains — are celebrated as masterpieces of Sinhalese sculpture and art, with breathtaking panoramic views of Sigiriya, Kandalama, and the Ritigala mountains.
- Dambulla Golden Buddha Statue: Visit the iconic golden Buddha statue at the base of the cave temple complex, a striking symbol of Sri Lanka's enduring Buddhist heritage.
